How many times have you heard about an event billed as A Family Fun Event? I have a two and a half year old daughter, and I’ve already been to plenty of such events. I can’t recall one time when I didn’t get nickeled and dimed to death all for the sake of pleasing my little cutie pie girl.
The NUCA Rodeo was held recently at the Canby Fairgrounds, so the drive from Vancouver already had my hair up. When I turned up at the NUCA registration table to get into the Rodeo, I thought I was on candid camera. The smiling woman registering us said, “Free entry, free raffle tickets, free drinks, free food.” I looked down at my daughter in disbelief, but she was already checking out a guy maneuvering a small plastic bucket with a Linkbelt 290.
We got there a little late, so the event was already in full swing with operators demonstrating their skills on equipment provided by CASE, Pape, Feenaughty, Triad, and Halton, while a live band played country music.
The friendly atmosphere could not be ignored. This really was a good old fashioned Family Fun Event. Kids ran around with slurpy blue-mouth smiles, families sat around tables eating hot dogs and burgers catching up with each other. There was tug-of-war, water filled balloon toss, and the main event for me, the pie eating contest. The winner received an Applebee’s $25 gift card and a sore stomach.
My daughter and I walked away from this event relaxed and with big smiles on our faces. The best part? My wallet didn’t suffer a hangover. Thank you NUCA.
